The goal of this project was to develop an accessible exhibition experience that would privilege rangatahi who are blind or visually impaired.
The client wanted the experience to supplement - rather than replace - the exhibition, and potentially they wanted it to be able to tour the country as a pop-up exhibition.
StudioC carried out a series of ‘empathy walk-throughs’ with blind and visually impaired rangatahi to understand how they experience the exhibition, and how the exhibition could better serve their needs. We then led a co-design workshop to prototype ideas that would privilege blind and visually impaired people, but still be open to everyone.
The result was a “sound pod”, an enclosed space where people could listen to audio experiences based on the historical material in the exhibit.
